Blackjack Dos and Don’ts

Like any other game, blackjack has its big dos and big do-nots. Knowing what you should and shouldn’t be doing while playing blackjack should be a big help to you, especially if you are only a beginner looking for information on how to play blackjack or some “what-works?” strategies to practice your game with. Even if you are a blackjack pro looking for a new tip, some of these could come in handy or, you can learn about the history of blackjack here. So without further ado, here’s a list of blackjack do's and don'ts which you should at least try to familiarize yourself with, and at best commit to memory, in order to use to your advantage:

Blackjack Do's

  • Do learn and understand the game’s basic strategies and use them. It will help you figure out when to make what move while playing, instead of randomly hitting or standing.

  • Do double down on your bet if your hand is 11.

  • Do hit at any number less than 15.

  • Do hit if you have a soft 17 or lower.

  • Do begin practicing blackjack in the free online mode before you actually start playing for money.

  • Do keep count of the cards if you can. Card counting is the most widely used blackjack strategy there is. We advise you to keep at least some track of the cards and, if you are really into it, try getting some tips from a blackjack professional.

  • Always assume that the hole card is a 10, as statistically speaking that’s the highest probability.

  • Do stand on a hard 17.

  • Do be sure to enjoy your game: win or lose, be gracious and have fun.

  • Do be nice to the dealer. This advice is applicable in land-based settings as well as when playing Live Dealer Blackjack online.

  • Do familiarize yourself with proper game etiquette when interacting with the dealer

  • Do read and watch blackjack books and blackjack movies - you might just learn something!

Blackjack Don’ts

  • Don’t hit with totals greater than 15 if the dealer’s up card is low.

  • Don’t be overconfident with your blackjack bets. If you happen to get a bad run of cards, it may cost you a lot.

  • Don’t believe that the game of blackjack is just about luck. This is one of the major mistakes players make about the game. Come to the blackjack tables armed with winning strategies and play wisely. In fact, you should definitely do what you can to educate yourself more and more by learning about probability and gaming techniques.

  • Don’t use the Martingale theory: this theory goes down as one of blackjack myths. The theory says that you should double after every loss, and keep doubling until you win. We repeat: Don’t do that. There’s way too much risk involved, especially as many blackjack tables have maximum bet sizes, Play safe.

  • Don’t split big numbers. If you have two tens or two eights, you’ve already got a pretty decent hand and chance of beating the dealer. Why risk a relatively sure thing? You might end up getting dealt two inferior new hands and losing both of them.

  • Don’t play blackjack when you are drunk. You will end up making silly decisions and likely mess up your bankroll.

  • Don’t believe that the way other players at the table play, or your position at the table, affects your game against the dealer; it does not.

So, don’t rely on blackjack myths. Next time you head out to play, keep these blackjack dos and don’ts in mind! Happy gaming!
